Modern Family star a Vegemite convert

MODERN Family star Ty Burrell is known for his comedic chops, but he also has a refined palate.

In what may be a first for an American, Burrell came away from Australia loving Vegemite.
While Ed O'Neill, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen and the rest of the Modern Family cast were not fans of Australia's favourite breakfast spread during their recent visit Down Under to shoot an episode of the hit sitcom, Burrell stashed a few jars in his luggage before flying back to the US.
"I love Vegemite," says Burrell, who plays bumbling dad Phil Dunphy.

"I was the only person on our cast and crew who liked it.
"I ate a lot of it.
"I came home with a couple of jars."
Burrell is known as one of Hollywood's nicest guys and has become one of the industry's busiest, cramming big-screen roles around his Modern Family schedule.
The 46-year-old voices talking dog Mr Peabody in coming animated film Mr Peabody & Sherman, and will play Bailey the Beluga in 2016's long-awaited Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory.
Fresh off the flight from Sydney, Burrell is in Beverly Hills to promote another big-screen project, Muppets Most Wanted, in which he plays French Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon, who tracks a Russian thief and Kermit lookalike named Constantine, and a burglar, portrayed by Ricky Gervais.
"It is weird," Burrell says of what it's like acting with puppets.
"The first day was alarming.
"The veil is lifted.
"It's like The Wizard of Oz because you see the person actually working on the muppet.
"Then you get used to them being your scene partner.
"You end up hanging out with the muppet just as much as what you do with the puppeteer."
Muppets Most Wanted was shot in England, but Burrell hopes future muppet movies and Modern Family episodes are shot in Australia.
Burrell says he will pitch any of his future work to be set in Australia.
"Why not have a CSI: Australia?" he says.
"We had so much fun down there.
"We didn't have any days off, but we'd finish filming at sunset so we got to try a bunch of restaurants and we filmed in locations that were not exactly a coalmine.
"We filmed on Bondi Beach and up at the Great Barrier Reef.
"I got to go scuba diving, which I had never done before.
"I was a little bit panicked, but I got over it.
"It was at Hayman Island and it was spectacular."
Muppets Most Wanted opens in Australia on April 10.
